RKRoger Kormendi, Principal

Dr. Kormendi (1949 - 2009) co-founded Kormendi \ Gardner Partners in 1991 with Cyrus J. Gardner. Together they shared ultimate responsibility for providing innovative financial advisory services for governmental and private sector clients alike.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Kormendi was on the faculties of leading academic institutions including the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago (1975-1985), where he was an Associate Professor of Business Economics; the School of Business Administration at the University of Michigan (1985-1998), where he was a tenured Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy; and the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University (1991-1992), where he was a Visiting Professor. At the Michigan Business School, Dr. Kormendi served as Chairman of the Business Economics Group and on the School’s Executive Committee.

In 1984, Dr. Kormendi co-founded MidAmerica Institute, a public policy think tank located in Chicago that focused on public policy related to financial markets, with a specific emphasis on the issues relating to derivative products including both traded and non-traded futures and options.

Over more than fifteen years at KGP, Dr. Kormendi’s transactional projects included the analysis, valuation, design and implementation of dozens of purchase, sale and investment transactions for financial and business assets in North America and Europe representing over $50 billion in book value. In those projects, he was variously responsible for designing and structuring the financial terms of the transactions, structuring and monitoring transactional due diligence, evaluating and valuing the assets, liabilities and business entities involved and analyzing the risks, returns and incentives of parties on all sides of the transactions.
 
Dr. Kormendi was the lead financial advisor for many financial advisory projects at U.S. government agencies including the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, Department of Agriculture, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of the Treasury, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Resolution Trust Corporation and Office of Personnel Management.

At KGP, and prior to that as a university professor and director of Mid America Institute, Dr. Kormendi was engaged by many major private corporations on a wide variety of advisory issues including financial markets, financial products, transactional structuring, and public policy interactions. He testified numerous times before Committees of the U.S. Congress on issues related to his expertise and served as an expert witness in major litigation on issues related to financial markets, derivative products, financial engineering and troubled asset resolution.

Dr. Kormendi published over fifty scholarly articles and books and wrote dozens of other professional papers and reports on a wide variety of subjects in economics, finance and public policy.

Dr. Kormendi earned a Ph.D. in Economics from UCLA where he was a Chancellors Intern Fellow, and a B.A. in Economics with High Honors from the University of Virginia where he was in the Honors Program in Economics.
